CROSBY, Minn.-A 13-year-old boy who died of an apparent drowning in a north-central Minnesota mine pit lake was identified by authorities on Monday, July 23, as Murdoch Edward Crust of Minneapolis.
Crust was reportedly attempting to retrieve a Frisbee on Friday evening when he was swept away in the current of the inlet of Serpent Creek. The boy was staying with family-including relatives local to the Brainerd lakes area-at a cabin at True North Base Camp.
An initial rescue and search attempt was called off late Friday night due to uneven and hazardous terrain beneath the water's surface. The lake bottom in the area gives way to steep drop-offs-from as little as 1 foot to 20 feet to 92 feet.
Divers found the boy's body Saturday in 92 feet of water.
