GRAND FORKS — One of UND’s top officials will be departing from the university next month for a job in New York.

Jed Shivers, UND vice president for finance & operations/chief operating officer, will be leaving the university next month to take on a similar role at Stony Brook University in Long Island, New York, UND announced in a press release Monday, June 6.

Shivers’ last day at UND will be Friday, July 15. A national search for his replacement is expected to be conducted and an interim will be named in the coming weeks.

Shivers has been with UND since April 2018 under then-President Mark Kennedy, who departed from UND in 2019. He took over the role from Alice Brekke, who had been with UND for around 40 years before she retired.

Shivers helmed UND’s administrative, financial and operational divisions, including financial operations, public safety and other areas of campus.

In a statement, UND President Andrew Armacost said he “relied heavily on (Shivers') financial acumen” and leadership of campus operations since he started at UND.

“His foresight in planning for our COVID-19 response made our campus safe and allowed us to come through the pandemic in a strong financial position,” he said. “I will miss Jed’s kindness, humor and extraordinary vision for the future of the UND campus.”

Shivers said his work on behalf of UND and the taxpayers has “been a great experience.” He thanked former administrators Brekke, the late former Provost Tom DiLorenzo and former interim Provost Debbie Storrs for their work, along with others on campus.

“Now with Andy Armacost as president and Eric Link as provost, I think UND has stable, thoughtful academic leadership that will continue UND’s upward trajectory. I’m looking forward to watching UND’s continued success,” he said in a statement.

Shivers came to UND from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York, where he served as associate dean for finance and administration for 11 years. Prior to that he spent 24 years at medical schools in such places as the University of California San Francisco, Yale University, University of Miami and Stanford University.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
