UPDATE: One dead in Grand Forks house fire

The Grand Forks Police Department said in a Sunday press release that one person has now died from their injuries

GRAND FORKS — One person has now died from injuries sustained in a Grand Forks home fire over the weekend.

Sarah Marie Gatica, 40, died, according to a Sunday, Jan. 16, press release from the Grand Forks Police Department.

Authorities from the Grand Forks police and fire departments, as well as Altru Health System paramedics, were dispatched around 2:05 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, to 2110 10th Ave. N. for a report of smoke in the residence.

According to a previous news release from the Grand Forks Police Department, while en route officers were informed that the caller, one of the residents, could feel the door of a room was hot to the touch, and couldn’t get out of the house.

When officers arrived on scene there was smoke and fire visible in the residence and they could see the caller through a window. Officers forced the window open. However, they were still unable to get the person out through it at that time.

GFFD personnel entered the residence, and with an officer’s assistance were able to get the caller out of the house through the window.

As fire personnel were inside the other resident was also found and removed from the building, the release said.

Fire personnel succeeded in putting out the fire in the residence without further incident.

There were no other occupants in the house.

The incident remains under active investigation by the Grand Forks Police Department and Grand Forks Fire Department. Any further updates related to this matter will be released by the Grand Forks Fire Department.
