Mayville State University has launched an online Master's of Education program.
The program is being offered for teachers who are already licensed, but wish to pursue graduate-level instruction as they attain a higher educational preparation level. The program also has an option for people who want to prepare teaching programs within an organization. Courses for a portion of the program are set to begin in early January.
“We are proud to offer this new and innovative graduate degree program for current teachers, many of whom are Mayville State University teacher education program graduates,” said Pam Johnson, dean and chair of the MSU Division of Education. “We look forward to welcoming new students in January of 2022.”
The program is offered entirely online. The courses are arranged in eight-week blocks and students may enroll in one to three courses simultaneously. The degree may be completed in as little as one year. Students can choose a full- or part-time plan of study.
Students can choose from three tracks in the program, the adult teaching and learning track, the innovative teaching practices track or the special education track.

The adult teaching and learning track is designed for teachers who want to continue their education after they are licensed, in order to further their professional development.
The innovative teaching practices track will help to develop educational leaders who can design and shape curriculum, and facilitate professional development and instructional improvement.
The third track of the program is for special education. It will be available for licensed teachers at the elementary or secondary level of instruction. Graduates of this track will be able to apply for special education licensure, in addition to their current teaching credentials. The track has 14 courses that adhere to the standards of the Council for Exceptional Children.
According to a release from Mayville State, the special education track of the degree has been arranged so graduates can develop curriculum in a district that has a limited number of special education teachers. Graduates will be able to facilitate the leadership of special education teachers and paraprofessionals, and may obtain coordinator roles.
Students who enroll in the special education track from outside the state need to be aware of the licensure requirements in the state in which they reside. Different requirements may call for additional courses.
Courses in the adult teaching and learning and innovative teaching practices tracks will begin on Jan. 12. MSU administrators are encouraging interested people to get in touch for more information.
“We welcome phone calls, visits, emails or Zoom meetings,” said Johnson. “Please reach out to let us know of your interest so that we can help with any questions you may have.”
