BISMARCK - North Dakota's governor and senior senator will join Vice President Mike Pence when he visits Minot Air Force Base Friday, Oct. 27.
Pence, a Republican, will meet with base leadership and address the airmen. The base is home to both B-52 bombers and intercontinental ballistic missile silos.
"It's important for the administration to be familiar with the good work of our airmen and understand the importance of maintaining a credible and modern nuclear force to counter threats like North Korea and Iran," Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., said in a statement.
Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., will be unable to make the trip, a spokeswoman said. Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., didn't immediately return a message inquiring about his plans.
Gov. Doug Burgum thanked the vice president for making the trip, which comes almost two months after President Donald Trump gave a speech in Mandan.

"As a former governor of Indiana, Vice President Pence also understands the vital importance of military bases, their personnel and their families to our states and communities, and we're thrilled to welcome him to North Dakota," Burgum said in a statement.
