Grand Forks businesses will temporarily be able to sell sealed bottles or cans of wine or beer to customers picking up food thanks to an emergency order signed by Mayor Mike Brown, the city announced in a press release.

Brown signed an emergency order Tuesday, March 24, that temporarily modifies certain food and beverage licenses to allow the sale of sealed bottles or cans of wine or beer to customers who are purchasing prepared food at the restaurant on a takeout or curbside delivery basis only. The order is effective Tuesday.

The order does not permit the delivery of wine, beer or other alcoholic beverages, however.

“Addressing COVID-19 remains our top priority but during these trying economic times, we will continue to support our economy, in particular, our small businesses," Brown said in a statement. “We are listening and continue to listen. And, when needed, will act.”

Traditional proof of age and open container laws are not affected by the temporary policy change and businesses will remain held to a high standard of conduct pertaining to responsible service, the city press release stated.
