BISMARCK -- A commencement speech by U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer this month linking legalized abortion with school shootings has attracted the attention of an Internet media outlet.

"Forty years ago, the United States Supreme Court sanctioned abortion on demand," he said in his speech at the University of Mary on May 4. "And we wonder why our culture sees school shootings so often."

Cramer's speech was highlighted in a Huffington Post article published Thursday.

In an interview, Cramer said Thursday he was trying to convey a message centered on speaking the truth about today's culture.

He told the graduates there are many cultural issues today that have created a disrespect for life, citing the practice of abortion among others, and society needs more people to stand up and speak the truth.

During the speech, Cramer also bemoaned the celebrity status thrust upon Bismarck newscaster A.J. Clemente after he uttered vulgarities in his first words on air and highlighted the Christian beliefs of America's founding fathers.

"Point was and is, we as a society don't want to face up to the fact that the cultural deterioration of our country has real consequences," Cramer said Thursday. "We have traded a culture of life for a culture of death and wonder why we don't celebrate life the way we used to -- life has become so disposable, yet we scratch our heads over violence."

Cramer, a first-term Republican from North Dakota, called the Huffington Post a liberal blog, saying it wasn't a surprise it was trying to discredit him.

During the commencement, Cramer also received an honorary doctorate degree in leadership.

He said he has done a lot of fundraising and volunteer work for the school, since he lives in Bismarck, and was "grateful they saw pleasure in it, but it really is my honor."
