McGREGOR, Minn. — The two people who died in a late-night house fire March 31 in rural McGregor have been identified as Raymond Jackman, 80, and Sandra Lee Neumann, 69.
According to the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was reported at 11:10 p.m. by Neumann, who told authorities that her house was filled with smoke, everyone was outside but her dogs were still inside the home.
The McGregor Fire Department along with the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. At 11:31 p.m. the McGregor Fire Department arrived and noted no one was outside of the residence. After entering the home firefighters found the bodies of Jackman and Neumann.
The Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office along with the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s office investigated the fire and there is suspicion of smoking and falling asleep on the couch, Aitkin Sheriff Dan Guida reported in a news release.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on Jackman and Neumann and the preliminary cause of death was determined to be smoke and soot inhalation.
McGregor is about 50 miles northeast of Brainerd.
