UND has hired a new vice president for marketing and communications, campus leaders announced Tuesday.

UND President Mark Kennedy has appointed Meloney Linder to the communications position. She will start Sept. 4.

"I am thrilled that Meloney Linder will be joining UND," Kennedy said in a press release. "She will be a wonderful addition to UND's senior leadership team, and I am sure will contribute in delivering ever more opportunity to our state and students."

Linder will oversee a number of departments within the university, including marketing and creative services, video production, UND's web presence and digital media. She will also handle media relations, the release said. Additionally, she will be in charge of crisis communication, public relations, as well as internal and external communication, including UND Today and the University Letter.

Linder will replace longtime spokesman and Interim Vice President for University & Public Affairs Peter Johnson, who was to retire in July 2017 but has been working part time. He will continue to work about half of the time through the upcoming legislative session next spring, Johnson said Tuesday.

Johnson said part of his role has been dealing with legislative relations in the past, something he'll continue doing through next May. He will also continue to help Linder with media relations until she settles into the role.

Linder, a Fergus Falls, Minn., native, was a finalist last September for the position, which was not filled until now.

Linder has served in many communications roles at universities across the country. She is currently the associate dean for communications, facilities and technology and chief

communication officer for the University of Wisconsin School of Business in Madison. She has also served as the vice president of institutional advancement at the University of Texas in Brownsville. There she was responsible for the internal and external marketing and communication for the university, as well as philanthropy.

Linder earned a bachelor's degree in mass communication with an emphasis in public relations from the University of Denver in 1993 and has a master's degree in organizational management from Ashford University, according to her LinkedIn profile. Additionally, she has extensive experience in corporate communications, marketing and brand management in public and private sectors.
