FARGO — Fargo police have identified the driver and victim of a deadly single-vehicle crash they suspect involved alcohol.
Elijah Jace Viestenz, 19, of Fargo, was driving the vehicle that crashed shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, police said in a statement Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Isaiah James Johnson, 21, of Fargo, was found unresponsive on the ground near the badly damaged vehicle, police said. Johnson, who was confirmed by police to be a passenger of the vehicle, died of his injuries at a hospital.
Viestenz was later found in West Fargo after allegedly fleeing the scene, police said. He was also taken to a hospital to be treated for unknown injuries.
No charges have been filed and Viestenz hasn’t been booked into the Cass County Jail. Fargo police say they have enough evidence to arrest Viestenz on suspicion of driving under the influence and criminal vehicular injury.
“Likely, what will happen is the state’s attorney will issue an arrest warrant for him once they review the case,” Fargo police spokeswoman Jessica Schindeldecker said.
A blood sample has been drawn from Viestenz and has been sent to a lab for analysis, Schindeldecker said.
