ROCHESTER, Minn. — The initial investigation into an apparent murder-suicide in northwest Rochester has found that an 18-year-old man shot his father before he shot himself, according to Rochester police.
Rochester Police Sgt. Eric Strop said Wednesday that while the investigation into the incident is still ongoing, evidence tends to support that Gary Raymond Pearson, 61, was shot before Maxwell Artem Pearson, 18.
The incident is believed to have occurred sometime between 2 and 4 p.m. Monday. A woman returned home to the residence and found her son had been shot, Capt. Casey Moilanen said Tuesday morning. Police located Gary Pearson when they arrived.
Both men were found deceased about 20 to 30 yards apart in the property's backyard, according to police. Police recovered a rifle from the scene, according to Lt. Mike Sadauskis. Both men suffered single gunshot wounds but police declined to release any further information.
Sadauskis said police have been speaking to the wife/mother to determine a possible motive.
Sadauskis said the family had some concerns about the 18-year-old's mental health.
