FORT TOTTEN, N.D. -- The FBI is investigating a shooting involving a tribal police officer at Spirit Lake Nation that occurred late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
FBI Special Agent Cindy Burnham confirmed the shooting happened and said authorities were on scene Wednesday morning. She declined to say the exact location of the shooting.
"It is a new and active investigation," she said, adding no other details will be released at this time.
Citing family members, WDAZ-TV reported "a young man," Joe Charboneau, died in the shooting.
Nedra Darling, spokeswoman for Indian Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior, said Indian Affairs responded to the shooting, but the investigation has now been turned over to the FBI.
She declined to provide any other details.
A phone message left for Spirit Lake Chairwoman Myra Pearson had not been returned by press time.
Spirit Lake's tribal headquarters is in Fort Totten, N.D., about 100 miles west of Grand Forks.
