Belcourt man sentenced for aggravated sexual assault of child

Adam Jason Poitra, 40, was sentenced to 36 years and six months in federal prison for aggravated sexual assault of an 11-year-old child. Judge Peter Welte also sentenced Poitra to lifetime supervised release and a $100 special assessment.

A Belcourt man has been sentenced to federal prison for aggravated sexual assault of child, the acting U.S. Attorney Nicholas W. Chase announced on Thursday, Sept. 30.

Adam Jason Poitra, 40, was sentenced to 36 years and six months in federal prison for aggravated sexual assault of an 11-year-old child. Judge Peter Welte also sentenced Poitra to lifetime supervised release and a $100 special assessment.

According to a news release from the Department of Justice, an investigation revealed that between September 2017 and May 2018, "Poitra sexually abuse an 11-year-old child countless times while in Belcourt."

This case was investigated by the Bottineau County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Plains Children’s Advocacy Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Greenly, District of North Dakota and Clayton Solomon, trial attorney, criminal division, Department of Justice prosecuted the case.
