Five people were injured in a two-car crash near Maddock, N.D., that resulted in charges for both drivers.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:20 p.m. Saturday, June 12, on 38th Street N.E., one mile east of Maddock, a community located in Benson County southeast of Devils Lake.
According to a release from the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash happened when vehicles driven by Handre Leus, 33, of Grace City, N.D., and Ryno Conradie, 33, of Maddock, collided.
The NDHP report says Leus and Conradie were both traveling eastbound, with Conradie in front of Leus. Conradie reduced his speed to complete a U-turn at an approach to travel westbound back toward Maddock. Leus struck Conradie at a right angle in the westbound lane of 38th Street NE.
Leus, Conradie and Andre Olivier, of Grace City, a passenger in Conradie's vehicle, sustained minor non-life-threatening injuries and refused transportation to a medical facility.
Two passengers in Leus' vehicle, Jacques Pitout and Martin Visagie, both of Grace City, both received serious non-life-threatening injuries. Pitout was transported to Trinity Hospital in Minot; Visagie was taken to CHI Saint Alexius in Devils Lake.
According to the NDHP, Leus has been charged with driving under the influence and following too closely. Conradie has been charged with driving under the influence and improper turn around.
The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
