A 38-year-old Drayton man has been identified as the person killed in a car accident outside of Grafton on Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Ross Mapel died from his injuries after his Honda Accord struck a snowplow truck from the North Dakota Department of Transportation. Mapel struck the truck from behind at about 12:30 p.m. The NDDOT vehicle was pulling a plow trailer to pre-treat roads for icy conditions as it traveled southbound on Interstate 29.

According to a report from North Dakota Highway Patrol, the plow truck had emergency lights activated. Mapel suffered fatal injuries from the crash and was taken to Unity Hospital. The crash remains under investigation by the NDHP.

The snowplow was driven by 44-year-old Drayton man Kevin Kirkeby, who was reportedly uninjured. No charges have been filed in the accident.

NDHP, Grafton Fire and Rescue and Grafton Ambulance responded to the scene, which was 20 miles southeast of Grafton.
