One man is dead and a second is critically injured after a crash with a semi Thursday, July 30, in Marshall County, Minn.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Jason Andrew Swanson, 42, of Gatzke, Minn., was driving a 1998 Peterbilt semi, pulling an empty gravel trailer, northbound on Highway 89 near Rollis Township around 10:45 a.m. A 2013 GMC Sierra pulling a flatbed trailer with a lawnmower driven by Vernon Leon Wander, 82, of Waubun, Minn., came to a stop at a stop sign on 390th Street Northeast and Highway 89.

A Minnesota State Patrol report says Wander pulled out into the intersection, causing the semi to lock up its breaks and strike the GMC Sierra. Wander suffered life-threatening injuries, and was taken to Altru Health System in Grand Forks for care. Wander's passenger, Keith Myron Rector, 81, also of Waubun, died of his injuries while en route to the hospital. Swanson was uninjured

According to the report, road conditions were dry, and alcohol was not a factor in the accident. Swanson was wearing a seat belt, Rector was not, and it is unknown if Wander was wearing a seat belt.

Assisting the Minnesota State Patrol were the Marshall County Sheriff's Office, Grygla EMTs, Middle River EMTs, and Life Flight.
