An announcement from Red River High School in Grand Forks has alerted families associated with the school of a “tragic accident” that claimed the life of a ninth-grader enrolled at the school.

Jonah Borth, according to the school, died “unexpectedly (Sunday) night in a tragic accident.” The school announcement said students were informed Monday morning and given the opportunity to meet with a member of the district’s crisis team.

The school, via the email from Principal Kristopher Arason, is urging families to not contribute to rumors about the student’s death.

“(Rumors) may turn out to be inaccurate and can be deeply hurtful and unfair to family and friends, and (we) caution you from contributing to or believing what you read on social media,” the statement said.

The Herald is investigating the report.
