Twin Cities man dies after SUV falls through ice on Wisconsin lake
BALSAM LAKE, Wis. — A Twin Cities man is dead after the sport-utility vehicle he was driving plunged through the ice on Balsam Lake in northwest Wisconsin on Thursday, Jan 17.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, authorities said they received a 911 call shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday reporting a vehicle had gone through the ice in the narrows separating west and east Balsam Lake, about 50 miles northeast of the Twin Cities. The caller did not see anyone get out of the vehicle.
About 25 minutes later, rescue crews recovered the body of a man from a submerged silver Toyota Rav 4. He was taken to St. Croix Regional Medical Center in St. Croix Falls, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 6 p.m.
The victim was identified Friday as David Maki, 63, of Blaine, Minn.
