MOUNTAIN, N.D. -- The Mountain Community Center may become a permanent site for the town’s post office.
The post office temporarily relocated to the community center last winter after the U.S. Postal Service identified problems with the building where it had been housed. The postal service announced an emergency closure Feb. 19 because damage to the building and roof made it unsafe for employees and customers, the postal service said.
Immediately after the closure, postal customers picked up their mail in Cavalier, N.D., about 17 miles northeast of Mountain, then, later, the post office moved to its temporary location a the Mountain Community Center.
There are about 60 postal customers in Mountain. The postal service held a public meeting there late last month to gather community input about where the post office should be permanently located, and the community center was identified as an alternative.
The Postal Service’s 30-day comment period about the permanent location is under way, and when it is completed Aug. 29, the permanent location will be announced.
