MITCHELL, S.D. -- A 23-year-old Mitchell man has been arrested, authorities say, for intentionally causing a vehicle crash, hitting a woman in the face, leaving the scene of another crash and then stealing a pickup and shooting a handgun toward an occupied vehicle.
Eric Rumbolz was arrested Sunday, Nov. 4, following multiple alleged crimes earlier that morning in Mitchell. At the time of his arrest, Rumbolz was a parolee with the South Dakota Department of Corrections. No one was injured and no property was damaged by the gunfire, police said Monday.
The Mitchell Department of Public Safety said Rumbolz and a woman were driving separate vehicles in Mitchell early Sunday morning when Rumbolz drove the front of his car into the back of the woman’s car. He then entered the woman’s car, struck her in the face and then drove away, police said.
Rumbolz then hit a small flatbed trailer parked curbside and then left the scene.
Police say Rumbolz later stole a pickup parked by an alleyway and then he drove past the woman who he assaulted earlier. The woman was sitting in her car when police say Rumbolz shot “several rounds” from a handgun. Rumbolz is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a past felony conviction.
The alleged crimes occurred at approximately 5 a.m. Sunday.
Rumbolz was arrested for grand theft of a vehicle, failure to stop after an accident and give notice to the property owner, intentional damage to property, aggravated domestic assault, discharge of a firearm from a motor vehicle in a municipality, possession of a firearm by person with felony drug conviction and simple assault domestic.
Police say the handgun in the shooting has not been recovered, and the investigation is ongoing.
Rumbolz could face more than 20 years in prison.
