Water main break near Valley Middle School causes day-long street closure
A water main break flooded North 20th Street outside Valley Middle School Thursday morning.
The burst was caused by the pipe's old age, Grand Forks Water Works Director Melanie Parvy said. The break happened around 9 a.m. Thursday and crews closed North 20th Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues.
The street was flooded—nearly 3,000 gallons per minute gushed from the break, Water Distribution Supervisor Dan Hanson said. Crews turned off service and drained the water before beginning repairs. Water service was turned off for over half of Valley Middle School and in about eight or nine nearby homes, he said
Hanson said he expects water service to be restored by around 5 p.m. Wednesday, though public works crews may take a bit longer to clean up the area.
