Eight firefighters responded to a blaze in a semi-trailer shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday at the Flying J Travel Center near 32nd Avenue South and U.S. Interstate 29.
Battalion Chief Mike Sandry of the Grand Forks Fire Department said the truck’s engine compartment and passenger cab were fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene. He said someone had come into the plaza at 4401 32nd Ave. S. to report the fire. The driver was not immediately on site but arrived just as firefighters were wrapping up.
“It took probably 10 minutes to get the fire totally out, and then we had some hot spots,” Sandry said. “We had to dig through it to make sure everything was out.”
Sandry said he did not know how long the fire had burned before firefighters got the call. No one was injured, and no other buildings or trucks were close enough to be damaged, he said.
The vehicle was registered in Manitoba, but Sandry did not immediately know the name of the driver. The Grand Forks Police Department and Altru Ambulance also responded to the scene.
