STREETER, N.D. - The Stutsman County Sheriff's Office is investigating a body found in a car Saturday morning, May 27, after a fire burned the vehicle at a rural residence near Streeter.
Stutsman County Sheriff Chad Kaiser said there is an ongoing investigation into the body and the cause of the fire, which probably happened sometime early Saturday morning. The residence where the car and body were found is located 6 miles northwest of Streeter on 50th Avenue Southeast.
Kaiser said as of Tuesday afternoon, May 30, the sheriff's office had not positively identified the body found in the car. He said the sheriff's office presumes it is the man who lives at the residence where the car was found, but it has not received official verification on the body's identity.
Kaiser said an autopsy was performed Tuesday morning, but the sheriff's office needs DNA from a relative to confirm the identity of the body.
He said the man's friend went to the residence where the car and body were found to see if the man was OK.
"He (the friend) knocked on the front door (of the residence)," Kaiser said. "When he went to leave he saw that the car was burned. He looked inside the car and saw what he thought was a body."
