EAST GRAND FORKS — Authorities here are investigating after a body believed to be a missing Grand Forks man was found near East Grand Forks Monday night, July 15.
The body has been sent to the University of North Dakota Medical Examiner for identification and to determine the cause of death, according to police.
A sergeant with the Grand Forks Police Department said he believes the body is that of Fernando Balboa, a man reported as missing one week ago Monday.
Family members said last week that Balboa had a liver problem, was recently diagnosed with cancer and that he required medication every four hours for his illnesses and that he could be in danger.
Investigators searched the Grand Forks area, including along the Red River for signs of Balboa, but reissued their call for help from the public after recent storms in the Grand Forks area.
Officials are expected to confirm the identity of the body Tuesday.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.
Balboa's family has created a GoFundMe account to pay for his funeral expenses.
