According to court documents filed Thursday in Clay County District Court, police were called to the Target store at 3301 Highway 10 E. on a report of a disturbance.

When police arrived at the parking lot, a Curt’s Lock and Key Service employee told them Shawn Michael Pedraza had called to get keys made for his car.

It was cold outside, the locksmith explained, so he let Pedraza sit inside his vehicle while he worked on Pedraza’s.

When the locksmith finished and Pedraza got out, he noticed that a lock pick and two tension wrenches were missing from his vehicle, the locksmith told police.

He confronted Pedraza about the theft, which Pedraza initially denied, court documents say. Pedraza eventually took the tools out of his jacket pocket and begged the locksmith not to call police because he was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Police arrested Pedraza and took him to the Clay County Jail, where court documents say they discovered an illegal benzodiazepam pill in Pedraza’s pocket.

Pedraza, 34, was charged with one count of felony fifth-degree drug possession and one count of misdemeanor theft.

His next court appearance is set for April 27.
