Kitchens are typically the most costly rooms to upgrade, but they also give the homeowners the biggest bang for their buck, said Rita Schuster, a realtor at Greenberg Realty in Grand Forks.
"People are willing to pay more for upgraded kitchens," she said.
As the center of the home, kitchens are often the meeting point for parties and family gatherings; therefore, having a kitchen that is updated and efficient is important to many homebuyers.
Elsie Johnson, a realtor at Crary Real Estate said, "They need to be very convenient, you need things at your finger tips."
Johnson and Schuster agreed that homebuyers are looking for upgraded appliances, new counters, an open floor plan and plenty of storage.

"Pantries are always a good seller," Schuster added.
Whether homeowners do a small upgrade or complete remodel, the kitchen is one room they're likely to get their money back.
Behind the kitchen, upgraded bathrooms are the second biggest seller for homes.
"You're not really at home because your kitchen is the heart of the home," Janelle said. "If your kitchen is uprooted, then it's just not right."
