Mayor's Choice Reception

Adult Art Classes

• Registration deadline Sept. 9: Pirjo Berg of Grand Forks will teach an adult painting class titled "Painting through the Ages" from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays in September and October at the North Dakota Museum of Art. Students will learn the history of painting through the use of ancient and contemporary methods. Registration is open until Sept. 9 or until the class fills. • Registration deadline Sept. 6: Guillermo Guardia of Peru will teach an adult figure drawing class from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays in October and November at the North Dakota Museum of Art. Each session will emphasize human proportions, body structure and drawing the human body at rest and in motion. Class is open to all levels; no experience required. Chautauqua-French Festival

• Aug. 23 - 25 near Red Lake Falls: The Asham Stompers, a dance group from Manitoba, will perform Aug. 24 and 25 during the Chautauqua and French Festival near Red Lake Falls, Minn. The dancers combine the Red River Jig with square dancing, adding some new steps to the traditional dance of the Canadian Metis. The festival also includes programs and crafts for children, along with traditional French food. The festival will take place at Old Crossing and Treaty Park on Red Lake County Road 3, seven miles northeast of Gentilly on County Road 11. Cost: Free. Info: (218) 289-8889.


Blues on the Red

• Aug. 24 in Town Square: The Blues on the Red summer concert series continues from 6 to 10 p.m. Aug. 24 with headliner Alex Jenkins and the Bomber. The event features the region's top blues musicians and food from Wild Hog Smokehouse Bar and Grill. A beer garden is available to those ages 21 and older. The Magic Family Project

• Through Sept. 3 at Blue Door: The Blue Door Gallery presents The Magic Family Project exhibition through Sept. 3. The exhibition features Darby Laine's photographic prints that were made using a 19th century developing method known as the Van Dyke brown process. Art Awards and Auction

• Sept. 23 at Mamma Maria's: North Valley Arts Council will host the Annual Arts Awards and Silent Art Auction dinner at 6 p.m. Sept. 23 at Mamma Maria's Italian Restaurant in East Grand Forks. The event will include the presentation of four awards and a silent art auction of pieces by regional artists.
