Summer is a time when pools open, flowers bloom and I will inevitably sunburn and then peel like a banana.
My skin's savior comes in the form of green goo - Up & Up Green Aloe Gel to be exact. While it does little for the pain from sunburn, I've noticed it does keep me from or stave off the eventual peeling of my fried skin.
The product itself looks like something out of a science fiction flick. It's not quite like the green slime made famous by various Nickelodeon shows, but it's pretty close.
A little goes a long way with this gel, so you have to rub it in pretty good, otherwise it will leave your skin a little sticky. The stickiness does disappear after a while, so it's safe to put clothes over the sunburned area without the gel staining them.
I usually put it in the fridge before applying for extra cooling relief.

The smell isn't anything wonderful, but it's not appalling either. If you've used other aloe products before, this aroma is pretty on point with those.
The gel I use comes in 16-ounce bottles so it takes a few summers for me to get through one, making it a great value.
Using sunblock would prevent you from having to use this gel in the first place, but no matter how you came to be sunburned, I'd recommend this product for soothing it.
