North Dakota residents have been receiving calls from people claiming falsely to be taking surveys of Blue Cross Blue Shield members, according to state Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem Friday.
His office has confirmed that Blue Cross is not making these calls.
The callers leave messages that ask recipients to call a number regarding a survey but Stenehjem said this is a "scam" and no one should call back.
"I am highly concerned that consumers will unwittingly provide confidential medical or financial information in response to these fraudulent calls," Stenehjem said in a news release.
Parrell Grossman, director of the state Consumer Protection Division, said the state doesn't know why these calls are being made but that they are common and could be a ruse to make sales or obtain marketing information or elicit confidential information for identity theft.
