A new restaurant is coming to Grand Forks.

The grand opening for Jake's is expected to be Oct. 18 at 4401 S. Washington St., said owner and operator T. Jake Smude, who grew up in Fertile, Minn.

Jake's will be a full-service restaurant, highlighted by fresh-baked rolls, fresh-cut french fries, hamburgers and polish sausages, which will be deep-fried and called "spikes," Smude said.

"We discovered that ourselves," Smude said of the spikes. "There are a couple restaurants on the East Coast that deep-fry hot dogs, so we did some experimenting and came up with something with a thin, crispy outside and a delicious juicy inside."

Smude has experience in various restaurants in Minnesota and the Dakotas. The kitchen manager will be Chris Kozak, who is from Winnipeg, studied at the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute in Minneapolis and also has worked in several restaurants in Minneapolis and Fargo.

Smude said Jake's will get its meat from L & M Meats. He said Jake's will have a seating capacity of 212 and plans to be open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. Groundbreaking for the restaurant was held Monday.
