On one of my calendars it says this is Parents Day. Somehow we never observed that in our house. Another calendar claims this is National Day of the Cowboy. They might as well call this the Day of the Horse Hair.
The days of July simply fly by. The days of January drag unless you are seeking the sun rays in Arizona or Florida. Or maybe in Texas.
This weekend the Sorlie Bridge downtown is closed to driving. Nothing says there is no walking across. The Saturday morning market grows each week as the gardens grow.
Furry friends will be taking center stage on Saturday at Turtle River State Park. And the Grand Forks Horticultural Society’s annual garden tour and plant sale is running from 10 a.m. to for touring that will be available. The garden tour continues on Sunday.
Looking back
Dick King and his Classic Swing Band were booked for their traditional Fourth of July Performance back in 1988. Those were the days the band was widely known. They played their program for visitors in Turtle River State Park.

That was the year St. Michael’s Catholic Church was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places. And the Rev. William Sherman said the distinction was good news for about 5,000 people in 1,800 households.
Jim and Adelyne Gibbs closed the A&W Drive Inn on Gateway Drive. It was the end of the Mama and Papa Burgers, the splashing fountain, the pink and white petunias and the push button ordering of curb service.
At the time, Gibbs said it was one of the most difficult decisions in his life. He was planning to start a convenience food store, the Herald reported. He had bought the A&W franchise in 1957 and moved here from Baudette, Minn. Other drive-ins included Toby’s It and Jacoby’s Hamburger Heaven along with the Kegs that have continued operation in the summers.
