"No way," he said, "will there be a retirement party for me. I am too stubborn."
So family and friends of Rod Hadland arranged the Hadland Classic Golf Tournament last Saturday. More than 100 showed up for the celebration of his 60th birthday and 35 took part in the golf tournament at King's Walk Golf Course.
Hadland, a long time Grand Forks Fire Department Battalion Chief, was delivered to the event in a white super stretch limo. A bagpipe player and the golfers were waiting for him in vintage golfing clothes. Even the golf balls that were in the swag bags for golfers had Hadland's face on them.
It was a fitting farewell for Hadland who will be retiring soon after 26 years as a Grand Forks firefighter. He says it has been a great career. "I loved going to work."
Hadland and his wife, Debbie, are looking forward to spending time in Phoenix and near Minneapolis in retirement years. He says that will put them near their five grown children and three granddogs.
