Let your imagination run wild when you decorate a Christmas tree. "More is better," according to Lynne Roche.
She knows because she is the guiding light behind the Santa Village display of trees at Lincoln Park Clubhouse. And then, decorating Christmas trees has always been her thing.
Once again this year, she has masterminded a display of more than 30 trees at Lincoln Park. The place will be open to the public as Santa and his elves set up a workshop there Dec. 8 to 11 and again Dec. 15 to 18. That's when Santa and Mrs. Claus plan to be there. If the weather is right there will be horse drawn sleigh rides.
Before she and other Park Board staff members started decorating trees, Roche had put up three in her own home. She was itching to get at the mammoth tree decorating project.
She likes using big balls so there is dimension. She likes to stick the ornaments clear inside the branches. And she says it doesn't always have to be ornaments. You can use little toys from the dollar store to decorate a Christmas tree.

"I like to let my imagination run wild," Roche said. "I love the lime green tree we had last year. This year there will be an M&M tree and another decorated with stuffed animals. And we have four new trees - copper, silver, pink and purple."
In between the Santa Village weekends, the place is open to groups who schedule appointments (746-2750) to rent it for Christmas parties for a cost of $225.

Thursday Music Club presents its annual Christmas Musical Sunday afternoon in United Lutheran Church, with a Christmas message from Rev. Terry Olson of Trinity Lutheran Free Church. . .Christmas in the Park continues in Lincoln Drive Park every evening through this jolly season, Lions Club members will be there to extend a welcome. . . Winter Wunderland runs Friday and Saturday night at UND Memorial Union ballroom. . . Maple View Memory Care Community is holding a Christmas Bazaar Saturday afternoon at 4650 S. Washington St.
Border Blades and the Grand Forks Park District are hosting a basic skills competition Sunday afternoon at the Eagles Arena. . . UND women's hockey players are ready to welcome the Gopher women from Minnesota to games tonight and Saturday at the Ralph. . . The UND women's hops team will be ready and able to take on Montana State here Sunday afternoon, and Sioux fans can hear from the coaches when they meet at noon today at the Alerus . . . While the Sioux hockey team is traveling to Anchorage, Alaska, for the weekend, the men's hoop teams have taken Coach Brian Jones out west for a game at Idaho State Saturday.

Q. What's all this about rivalry at the Ralph and Rock at the Betty?
A. Well, the people in charge of things want everyone to come for the women's hockey team rivalry at 7:07 p.m. at the Ralph and stay for the Brett Michaels show at the adjoining Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. Anyone with a concert ticket gets into the hockey game free. And the idea is to wear white and create a white out for the Gopher games.
