There was a time when I worried about pigeon droppings around Grand Forks City Hall. I worried about the junk cars that used to mar the west entry to this city from U.S. Highway 2.
I worried about Themis, the goddess of justice, who stands atop Grand Forks County Courthouse. That was when she had to go to Minneapolis for repairs.
Some things come and go. The importance of Latin studies goes on and on. That is why I worry about the teaching of Latin as the snow keeps drifting down.
There is good news.
Latin is alive in Grand Forks high schools. In fact, there are classes in both Central and Red River High Schools.

Jason Hawley is the teacher here. He also has taught in Japan. He says in 2018 what is old is new again. Latin Days have been re-launched. They originally were held at Concordia College in Moorhead. This year, they will be held on April 12 and 13 in the UND Memorial Union.
Republicans, Pickleball
The weekend arrives with Republicans gathering at the Alerus and snowbirds in Arizona wondering whether to come home. Some rent through April. They drive in order to have their cars all winter. Then like the birds above they head north when the weather seems right. They might make a three-day trip and go through Tucumcari, N.M., and Salina, Kan.
Around the Forks, there are things to do this weekend. There's a pickleball tournament in the East Grand Forks Senior High school gymnasium. And an Entertaining History lecture is set for 2 p.m. Sunday in the Myra Museum.
Ask Marilyn
Q. What is Mother Nature's challenge?
A. She has to clean up her act and bring spring in before next weekend. On Saturday, April 14, the 32nd annual Gardening Saturday is scheduled. It will feature John Ball of South Dakota State who will talk about trees.
Q. Any interesting license plates spotted around here lately?

A. Well, one was POLICE. Also FTNSDOC, BUS 9 and UDAWGI6.
