People with books in hand may hardly notice that January is bowing out.

The month with all of its flaws is especially good for reading. And Wendy Wendt, director of the Grand Forks Library, says "The Light Between Oceans" by M.L. Stedman is one of the books most requested for takeout this month. Also in top demand has been "Sixteenth Seduction" by James Patterson.

"End Game" by David Baldacci was most wanted by patrons of East Grand Forks Campbell Library. And "Column of Fire" by Ken Follett is also popular, according to Angela Salgado, public service librarian.

"Into the Water" by Paula Hawkins is one of the new books in demand at the Crookston Library. The library with Chris Boike as director has a revolving collection with others in the area.

"The Fix" by David Baldacci and John Grisham's "Camino Island" move out quickly. And "Dangerous Minds" by Janet Evanovich is a Crookston favorite.

Hoops and hockey

Those who look up from their books will notice the last weekend of January is here. There's a meeting of UND boosters beginning at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Alerus Center. Those who attend will be updated by emcee Lowell Schweigert on the happenings at Zeeland, N.D. They will get a glimpse from coaches on weekend sports. They include women's basketball with Idaho at 2 p.m. Saturday and hockey Friday and Saturday with the team from Denver as guests.

What are they eating?

Everything from popcorn and ice cream to hot dogs and dinner in a bag at The Betty. And at The Ralph they wander the marble floors of the corridors chomping on popcorn and Dippin Dots, according to Jody Hodgson, general manager. They also buy bottled water, pretzels, hot dogs and a taco in a bag.

And beer!
