Marilyn Hagerty: Fourth of July celebrations are here this weekend

Word is swirling around that the Kegs is up and running again. The old-fashioned barrel-like drive-in at 911 N. Fifth St. has almost forever been a must-do visit for old timers who come back to the Forks in the summer time. People would like to be there, sitting in the shade drinking lemonade.

The calendar on the wall says Thursday was Canada Day. And it doesn’t have to tell us Sunday is the Fourth of July. There are firecrackers heard late in the recent nights. There is the Sertoma Club making plans for the celebration in Grand Forks.

These are the precious days of summer that we hanker for all winter long.

Word is swirling around that the Kegs is up and running again. The old-fashioned barrel-like drive-in at 911 N. Fifth St. has almost forever been a must-do visit for old timers who come back to the Forks in the summer time. People would like to be there, sitting in the shade drinking lemonade.

Laura and Becky Hanson and their brother Rick Hanson have seen to that. After a long winter of fixing up, they are up and running and the word is spreading. The Hansons also operate the North Side Café. At one time, they operated the coffee shop and restaurant in the Grand Cities Mall at 17th Avenue South and South Washington Street.

For long time customers, the Kegs is well known. It began only as one small keg – called the barrel. It was one of a string of two-story root beer barrels across the upper Midwest. They were owned by the late William “Harry” Muzzy and his wife Martha of Crookston.
