STEM is another program Grand Forks Public Library will offer for children this summer, and Children's Librarian Aaron Stefanich is particularly excited about giving kids a chance to learn, explore and have fun with math and science.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and is being offered through a partnership among Grand Forks Public Library, Dakota Science Center and UND School of Engineering and Mines
STEM Kids was made possible by grants from Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers of Chicago and the North Dakota State Library, money which was used to buy print and audiovisual STEM materials, along with STEM kits that will be used for programming.
In order for all of the children to have a hands-on experience with the kits, STEM Kids will be limited to eight children per session. The first three weeks of programming will be for children in grades K-2, and the final four weeks of programming will be for grades 3-6.
Because of limited space, parents will be required to fill out a short application form for each child. Not all children who fill out an application will be able to attend STEM Kids this summer. However, all of the STEM kits can be used again and the library plans an after school STEM Kids in the fall.
