The Grand Forks County Historical Society is giving folks a glimpse of life during the 1890s through 1920s this weekend.

“We want people to have the general idea of what the lifestyles were like during those years,” Marly Peterson, a member of the historical society board, said. “We’ve never really done anything like this before.”

The society’s “Living History” event will be hosted on the grounds of the Myra Museum on Sunday from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., and admission is free.

Peterson, who is on the society’s events and programs committee, said that Living History is intended to be a fun afternoon for families.

Groups including the Busy Beaver Woodcarvers, the Fabric Arts Guild of the Red River Valley and the Polish National Alliance Dancers of Warsaw, N.D., will also be participating in Sunday’s festivities, to include crafts, entertainment and recreational activities.

Woodcarving will be the featured activity to start the event at 12:30, followed by appearances from society members portraying local historical figures, including Mayor Henry Wheeler, starting at 1.

Throughout the afternoon, various sites on the museum’s grounds will feature fiber arts, traditional card games and a presentation on vintage cars. At 1:30, the Polish dancers will perform at the Myra Pavilion and then sell traditional Polish products such as sausages in the historical society’s country store.

Starting at 2, attendees can check out a blacksmithing demonstration, learn how to make an origami crane or catch a hymn performed by the choral group from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. At 2:30, North Country Fiddle and Dance will perform, followed by an audience participation session where Jeanne O’Neil will lead guests in performing simple square dances.

To close the event, at 3:30, more performers will take to the stage at the Myra Pavilion, including Fall Creek, a barbershop quartet.
