Grand Forks Public Library has completed a series of tech upgrades that includes many new computers and self-service check-out stations for patrons.

Library Director Wendy Wendt said the checkout stations, in place for a few weeks now, are similar to self-service stations at supermarkets, only a lot easier.

But the biggest upgrade is a renovation of the computer lab that adds 24 new computers. Older computers have been moved outside to the main part of the library, meaning that, even when the lab is closed for a class, patrons still have other computers they can use.

Along with the new computers is a system allowing patrons to signup to use the computers by themselves instead of waiting for a librarian to sign them in.

Wendt said funding for the computers came entirely from grants, rather than taxes. Most of the funding came from the Knight Foundation, she said, but several other foundations also had a role.
