Too late for breakfast. A tad too early for lunch.
The answer was brunch at Sky’s. Visitors from Winnipeg last Sunday were anxious to try the restaurant that overlooks downtown Grand Forks – even though DeMers Avenue has been torn up with construction.
We were pleased to find reserved parking for guests at the rear of the building. And from its second floor setting, the upscale restaurant in the heart of the city offers a broad view high above the downtown area. It is reachable by escalator or elevator.
With Marilyn (MA) and Derek Alexander (DA), I studied the brunch menu. It features a Crab Cake Oscar topped with scallions and is one of the best sellers. It is served with two over-easy eggs and Hollandaise sauce. And there are Huevos Rancheros – eggs over easy with Mexican flare.
There were also choices of shrimp and grits and a petite filet mignon served with two eggs and hashbrowns.
My choice was smoked salmon eggs Benedict ($18). MA chose crème brulee French Toast ($14). And DA ordered a Denver omelette ($15). It was made with smoked pork loin, peppers, onions and cheddar cheese.
Although there are brunch cocktails listed on the menu, we enjoyed coffee. The ambiance was peaceful and quiet – unlike the more lively chatter you hear on late afternoon or evening visits to the restaurant.
Sky’s has become an established downtown restaurant since it opened four years ago. It succeeded the closing of Sanders long operated by Kim Holmes in the location now occupied by Ely’s Ivy at 22 S. Third Street.
The restaurant is one of the largest in Greater Grand Forks with seating capacity of 110. The ceiling is high and very large windows overlook the downtown business area.

Report card: An upscale menu offers a wide array of Sunday brunch choices along with odds ‘n ends including pastry. Servers are experienced and courteous. The average brunch tab ranges from $14 to $19 and $20 to $25. Reservations are recommended.
