EatBeat: Things are getting back to normal at the Italian Moon

The place is different from many chain or group restaurants because in these days it is one of a kind. With some customers, it is most popular on Sundays for brunch or for late afternoon visits to the salad bar.

“Things are getting back to normal.”

That’s the word at the Italian Moon on South Washington Street. The Moon is up and running after being closed several weekends earlier this year because of coronavirus

Once again, customers are gathering near the buffet for fresh vegetables and other choices to go with the pizza they order to come fresh out of the kitchen. There, Jeff Fontaine handily manages production.

Along with pizza, the Moon promotes buckets of chicken and fries or mashed potatoes. There are side order offerings of French fries and onion rings. And there are soup orders by the pint or half pint.

There’s a Moon Salad on the menu.

There also is conventional ordering from tables. The menu lists full dinners including chicken tenders, beef brisket, cod and pulled pork. There is a listing of chimichangas and chalupas along with Mexican choices. Then there are burgers and subs. There is macaroni and French fries along with chicken nuggets for kids – and seniors.

Most people don’t have enough room for dessert. However it is possible to find a monster cookie sundae, apple pie ala mode – or even a chocolate chip cookies. Dessert is always the farthest thing from my mind when I visit the Moon.

On two recent visits to the Moon, I have opted for the salad bar where there also is freshly made pizza. It also is an agreeable choice of place for eating with a granddaughter who likes the wide range of foods available. The salad bar has been improved, and servers stand by to lend help if needed. The servers, in fact, make for a more pleasant visit to the restaurant.

Some customers tend to come in early to be near the salad bar. Others make arrangements to gather in the party room. For those who want a traditional restaurant visit, there are booths. Some of them look out on South Washington Street.

The fact that there is no front door at the Moon sets the theme. The place is different from many chain or group restaurants because in these days it is one of a kind. With some customers, it is most popular on Sundays for brunch or for late afternoon visits to the salad bar.
