Contestants selected for Home of Economy-Grand Forks Herald Pie Bake-off

The four-week tournament will begin Aug. 22.

GRAND FORKS — The 16 bakers for the first Home of Economy-Grand Forks Herald Pie Bake-off have been chosen, selected from a field of 32 candidates from Greater Grand Forks and beyond.

Competing in the event will be Rose Fuchs, of Grand Forks; Evan Andrist, of Grand Forks; Tammy Schmitz, of Grand Forks; Brityn Proulx, of East Grand Forks; Victoria Bouvette, of Grand Forks; Mallory Handford, of Grand Forks; Amy Lents, of Grand Forks; Jeannine Lazur, of Reynolds; Peggy Raddatz, of Grafton; Caitlin Olson, of East Grand Forks; Brenda Dufault, of Grand Forks; Alexandra Lunseth, of Manvel; Brenda Kovar, of East Grand Forks; Jill Hanson, of Newfolden, Minn.; Lynda Kappel, of Manvel; and Brenda White McCauley, of Grand Forks.

The field was selected by the Herald, based on submitted biographies, third-party nominations and a random drawing.

The Herald will highlight each baker in stories and photos that will publish online and in the newspaper's print and e-editions in the coming days.

About the event

The tournament: The Home of Economy-Grand Forks Herald Pie Bake-off will place 16 local and regional bakers in a bracketed tournament that will – for those who advance through the rounds – last four weeks, starting Aug. 22.


Judging: Among the judges will be Kristen Whitney, executive chef at the North Dakota Museum of Art Cafe; Lane Leech, head chef at Harry's Steakhouse; and Jessica Rerick, a trained chef, food blogger, former Herald food columnist and owner of Craveable Kitchen, a line of gourmet kitchen spices and mixes.

They will use a scorecard system to blindly judge two pie bakers at a time. Based on the scoring, one baker will advance, while the other will be eliminated. The tournament will continue until a champion is crowned in September.

Sponsors were assigned via drawing, except in cases where the contestant has a connection to a sponsoring business. The business that sponsors the eventual winner will receive a free advertising package from the Herald.

Prizes and gifts: The overall champion will have the choice of a pie safe from Home of Economy (worth $1,400) or a $500 gift card from Home of Economy. The top winner also will receive $500 cash from the Herald, in the name of their business sponsor. The second-place baker will receive $200 cash from the Herald, in the name of their business sponsor.

Also, all contestants will receive aprons from Greenberg Realty; $25 gift cards to Hugo’s for each pie they bake, courtesy of Home of Economy; scrapers and flour from the North Dakota Mill; finely granulated, powdered and brown sugar, donated by American Crystal Sugar Company; and $10 gift cards for Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops from the Grand Forks Herald (underage contestants will receive a Hugo’s gift card).
