UND's Trio Ferace will play classical concerts in April

Muiderman Theater near Thompson, N.D., will host its first big classical music event at 7:30 p.m. April 21 with a concert by Trio Ferace, a UND student piano, cello and violin trio.

Muiderman Theater near Thompson, N.D., will host its first big classical music event at 7:30 p.m. April 21 with a concert by Trio Ferace, a UND student piano, cello and violin trio.

Trio Ferace also will perform at 3 p.m. April 28 in the Hopper-Danley Memorial Chapel behind the UND Hughes Fine Arts Center.

Tickets for the Muiderman Theater concert will be $10 and can be purchased through the Chester Fritz Auditorium box office at (701) 777-4090. The concert will be a fundraiser to support the trio's trip to Japan in May to help build ties between Tokai University and UND.

Donations can be given through the Chester Fritz box office when tickets are purchased. A silent auction also will be announced. Donations also will be accepted through the UND Department of Music; contact Janice at (701) 777-2646 or Tammy at (701) 777-3271.

Trio Ferace is a select group of UND students who began playing together in January: Cecilia Garcia-Gaul on violin; Fernando Vargas on cello and Rachel Abbe on piano, directed by UND piano professor Nariaki Sugiura. The trio's program will feature works by Beethoven and Piazzola, and a piece written by UND professor Chris Gable for the ensemble.

About the trio

Garcia Gaul was born in Argentina and began violin studies in the Conservatory Gilardo Gilardi, where she graduated in 2007 as a teacher and performer. She began work on her master's degree at UND with Professor Alejandro Drago in fall 2010, is a recipient of a UND string quartet scholarship and will graduate in May. She teaches lessons at Arioso Music Academy.

Vargas was born in Venezuela, studied at the Geneva Conservatoire in Switzerland and finished his undergraduate degree at the University of the Southern Mississippi. He has studied with Daniel Grosgurin, Alexander Russakovsky and Carmen Rosa Rodriguez and attended master classes with prestigious maestros such as Christine Walevska, Joshua Roman, Sandor Devich. He is pursuing a master's degree in cello performance with Professor Simona Barbu.

Abbe is from Grand Forks and began piano lessons with local teacher Gloria Bethke. She is pursuing an undergraduate degree in music therapy and also majoring in piano performance with Sugiura. She teaches lessons at Scott's Music.

At Tokai University in May, Trio Ferace will collaborate with university students to perform a concert. They will stay with community members and will experience the culture of Japan. Abbe will give a presentation about American music therapy.
