A UND student won third place and $500 from JLG Architects Thursday in a contest to answer the question: Where do you learn best?
Winners of JLG's "Think Outside the Desk" video competition were announced at the Empire Arts Center, where the top 10 films were screened Thursday night.
The contest, open to full-time students attending North Dakota colleges and universities, asked students to explain in a creative two- to three-minute video where they learn best both on- and off-campus, and how would improve learning spaces on campus.
More 30 submissions were received, including 11 from UND students.
"We were so proud of the quality of the submissions," said Jim Galloway, a partner at JLG Architects and head of the firm's Education Division. "The results and participation from this contest have been greater than we anticipated. This whole process has been extremely fun, and we have received information that we can incorporate into our future design processes."

The $2,500 first place prize went to a duo of NDSU students, Christine Hoefs and Katie Dockter, for their video, "Distraction." The $1,000 second place prize went to Thomas Erickson, also from NDSU, for "Studying Spaces: A Musical Monologue." The $500 third place prize went to Theodore Bibby of UND for his video, "Fieldwork in Antarctica."
Winners were selected by representatives from the JLGedu division.
JLG based the "Think Outside the Desk" competition on Herman Miller, Inc.'s "Hey, Where Do You Learn Best" competition, which debuted in January 2010 and was open to all college students in the country.
All submissions will be posted on JLG's YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/user/JLGArchitects , by Saturday.
