Outstanding Teens
Two new titleholders: Mia Pagnac of Bemidji was crowned Miss Grand Cities Outstanding Teen and Alyssa Black of Grand Forks was crowned Miss Grand Forks Outstanding Teen during a Jan. 29 competition at Empire Arts Center, Grand Forks. Pagnac is a dancer and her platform promotes blood donation. She will advance to the Miss Minnesota Outstanding Teen Pageant on March 31 in Eden Prairie, Minn. Black's platform was about bullying prevention and awareness, and her talent was singing. She advances to the Miss North Dakota Outstanding Teen Pageant on June 2 in Williston, N.D. Miss Grand Cities Outstanding Teen First Runner Up: Alyssa Mitzel, East Grand Forks. Miss Grand Forks Outstanding Teen runners up: First runner up, Miranda Smith, Grand Forks; second runner up, Miranda Phelps, Grand Forks. State pageants: Both state pageants are preliminary competitions to the Miss America Outstanding Teen Pageant (a division of the Miss America Organization and the teen equivalent to the Miss America title) in August in Orlando. Art benefit auction
Bidding by phone deadline is Friday: The annual Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction on Saturday night at North Dakota Museum of Art in Grand Forks will showcase 52 for-sale works of art by local, regional and national artists. Only a few tickets remain to attend the auction. (For tickets, call (701) 777-4195.) However, you can bid on any of the art works without attending the auction. To see the art that's for sale, go to the museum galleries on the UND campus, or visit www.ndmoa.com . Click on "Events," then "Benefit dinner and auction" to find a link to a picture and a brief description of each piece. How to bid: Bidding starts at $100. If you'd like to submit a bid on any piece, you can do so by calling the North Dakota Museum of Art at (701) 777-4195 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline to bid by phone is Friday.

Saturday at Fire Hall Theatre: Are you interested in performing at the next 5-Alarm Cabaret March 4 at Fire Hall Theatre? Auditions are being held from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Fire Hall Theatre in Grand Forks. And if you're not ready or able to audition for, there will be more opportunities in the future.
Winter Carnival
- Feb. 12 at the Alerus: The Winter Carnival with the Great Brodini, a magic/comedy act from St. Paul, will be from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Alerus Center ballroom, Grand Forks. The Great Brodini will perform at 1 and 3 p.m. Admission is $5. The Winter Carnival will feature inflatable games, face-painting, balloon twisting, carnival games, tic-tac bowl, fishing for prizes, Plinko, cake walk, prize wheel, a raffle, silent auction and more, with performances by ATA Karate, Red River Valley Gymnastics and the Red River High School drumline from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $1 for adults and free for kids. Benefit: All proceeds go to Grand Forks Head Start.
Humanities council
NDHC support: The North Dakota Humanities Council has awarded $1,000 to UND in support of the poster exhibit "Cold Recall: Reflections of a Polar Explorer," coming April to Grand Forks from the Fram Museum in Olso, Norway. Cavalier County award: $2,500 to Cavalier County Job Development Authority for "After Safeguard: Ruins, Remnants, Stirrings" about the Cold War missile installation in Cavalier County, coming in October to Langdon, N.D. Preservation North Dakota: $2,984 to Preservation North Dakota for "Place, Memory, and the Humanities: Preservation North Dakota Celebrates Prairie Places," hosted at the Wishek (N.D.) Civic Center, with activities May 18-20 in McIntosh, Logan and Emmons counties. Spirit Room: $3,000 to the Spirit Room, Fargo, for the "Books On Screen Film Series," featured at Fargo Public Library at 2 p.m. each Sunday from April 1 to May 6.
