Performances starting Wednesday: Three finalists for the UND Department of Music staff position for cello (to be filled in the fall) will give free performances beginning at 8 tonight at Josephine Campbell Recital Hall, UND Hughes Fine Arts Center. Performances: Wednesday, Simona Barbu; March 2, Yeon-Ji Yun; March 9, Erin Ellis. Concert Tuesday: UND Chamber Orchestra Goes Symphonic! will be performed at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Josephine Campbell Recital Hall. Tickets are $3 for students and senior citizens, $6 for adults and $12 for a family pass. All military are free with ID. March 10: The official presentation of the UND String Quartet will be March 10 at the UND Hopper-Danley Memorial Chapel. The quartet features Ian Andrew Martin, violin; Joel Tosta Alarcon, violin; Lihue Czackis, viola; and Austin Soderstrom, cello. A time for the performance will be announced later. April 3: Spring Strings 2011 will be at 2:30 p.m. April 3, location to be announced, in conjunction with the UND High School Honor Orchestra weekend. 'Beyond the Gates'
Wednesday night at UND: Global Visions Film Series will present "Beyond the Gates" at 7 tonight at the UND Memorial Union Lecture Bowl. About the movie: In April 1994, after the airplane of the Hutu president of Rwanda was shot down, the Hutu militias slaughtered the Tutsi population. A Catholic priest (John Hurt) and an idealistic English teacher (Hugh Dancy) lodged 2,500 Rwandan refugees under the protection of the Belgian U.N. force and under siege by Hutu militia. Directed by Michael Caton-Jones, released in 2005. (1:56) Rated R for strong violence, disturbing images and language. Admission: Suggested $1 donation.
'Tops in Blue'

Thursday at the Chester Fritz: Tops in Blue, the premier entertainment showcase of the U.S. Air Force, will present a free concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at UND Chester Fritz Auditorium in Grand Forks. "We Believe" is a celebration of American ideals and values done to song and dance, a news release said. The show is free and open to the public; no tickets will be issued.
Concert
Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran: Christian singer/songwriter Madison Lorentzen will be in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Forks. Lorentzen grew up on a farm with nine siblings, received an acoustic guitar from his uncle when he was 12 and learned to play and write songs with help from friends and family. When he was 18, he did a musical tour of Alaska and moved there. Today, he and wife, Morgan, live in rural North Dakota. 'Millie'
Opening March 3 at Central: Central High School will present the musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie" at 7:30 p.m. March 3-5 and 2 p.m. March 6 in the Grand Forks Central High School Auditorium. The show, set in 1920s New York when the Charleston had taken Broadway by storm, is about young Millie Dillmount (Daniella Lima), who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It's a time when women were entering the work force and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever.
