'Birdie'

Sept. 6 and 7 performances: The New York Kammermusiker, a chamber ensemble formed in 1969 by North Dakota native Ilonna Pederson, will perform two shows in North Dakota in September. The ensemble performs worldwide, presenting double-reed music from the Renaissance through contemporary periods, and many of the pieces are introduced and explained with humor and good fun, a news release said. Jamestown show: The New York Kammermusiker will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Reiland Fine Arts Center, Jamestown (N.D.) College. Tickets will be sold at the door. Fargo show: The ensemble will perform Sept. 7 at Avalon Events Center, 613 First Ave. N., Fargo, with a pre-concert theater performance at 6:30 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. concert. Lawrence Welk tribute
Sept. 10 in Fargo: "Dakota Air: The Radio Show" will preset a tribute to entertainer Lawrence Welk, one of North Dakota's most famous native sons, with a live performance at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Fargo Theatre. The music of Welk's "Champagne Orchestra" will be performed by entertainers from across the region, including Victor Schwan, Reed Malm, Sam Mack, Vicki Melchior, Carolyn Wintersteen and Merill Piepkorn, the show's host and executive producer, and former North Dakoka first lady Nancy Jones Schafer, the Harley Summerfeld Band and dancers Levi and Bethany Andrist. About LW: Welk (1903-1992), a native of Strasburg, N.D., was a successful band leader before he began hosting the weekly TV program, "The Lawrence Welk Show," which aired from 1951 to 1971 and continues in syndication today. Fall tickets: Tickets are now on sale for Garrison Keillor's fall performances of "A Prairie Home Companion" in St. Paul.
