The Grand Forks Public Library and the Northern Great Plains History Conference will present a discussion from 2 to 4 today with Robin David about how UND incorporates the Tim O'Brien book, "The Things They Carried," into its honors curriculum.
David, an assistant professor in the UND Honors Program, is speaking as part of the history conference today at the Grand Forks Clarion Inn. His presentation is free and open to the public.
It also will be part of The Big Read, an event sponsored by Grand Forks Public Library and other organizations that focuses on reading "The Things They Carried" and features activities through Nov. 14.

Turtle River State Park at Arvilla, N.D., will present an orienteering and outdoor safety demonstration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday as part of its celebration of "The Things They Carried."
The outdoor event will feature two programs, "Finding Your Way" and "Creating Your Character." "Finding Your Way" will be hands-on learning about orienteering with a compass and GPS unit. Participants will experience a geocache hunt during the session to find excerpts from the book. The second program will engage the participants in literary and visual art projects.
Tina Harding of the Turtle River Outdoor Learning Center will present the programs, which are for ages 10 and older.

The program is free but a vehicle pass is required to enter the park. Bring your own lunch.
