Sunday: End of season for GF Children's Choir

The Grand Cities Children's Choir will be in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at United Lutheran Church, Grand Forks, a performance that will close it's ninth concert season, titled "Horizons."

Sponsored by Grand Forks Public Schools and a division of the Summer Performing Arts Company, the Grand Cities Children's Choir program is four choirs which serve children in grades 3 to 9.

Sunday's concert will feature Primo Voce, conducted by Becky Mercer and Melanie Popejoy; Accordo Voce, conducted by Geoff Mercer; Canto Voce, conducted by RuthAnn Tuseth; and Poco Voce, conducted by Connie Stordalen. Lynn Liepold, Mary Ann Devig, Cassel Everson, and Roxanne Gessler accompany the choirs.

The choirs will perform "Sarasponda," "The Firefly," "Old Dan Tucker," "The Poet Sings," and "Dry Your Tears Afrika" (from the movie "Amistad").

Accordo Voce will perform a choral arrangement of the Guns N' Roses hit "Sweet Child of Mine," featuring singers from the choir. Primo Voce will perform a song in memory of Ali Borgen and James Freestone, two former GCCC members who died in the past year.

The concert finale will feature all five choirs, members of the mentoring program, and GCCC alumni singing "Here's to Song," the program's theme song. A reception will be held after the concert in the church fellowship hall.

Melanie Popejoy is founder and artistic director for the program and vocal music instructor at Valley Middle School.

Some of the highlights of the ninth concert season were the fall concert and performances at the ArtWise elementary school art show, a guest appearance on the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Holiday Concert, and a joint performance with the UND Wind Ensemble, Popejoy said in a news release.

The Grand Cities Children's Choir is a performance based, music education program whose mission that offers children the experience of musical artistry and excellence through choral singing in a child centered atmosphere. Nearly 250 students take part in the program and represent elementary schools, middle schools and high schools in Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, Thompson, N.D., Crookston, Cavalier, N.D., Grafton, N.D., Manvel, N.D., and Emerado, N.D.
