UND pianist Nariaki Sugiura will use Skype technology Saturday to connect students with the first piano master class of the season.

Sugiura, who recently joined the music faculty at UND, figures Skype -- a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet -- is a great way to deliver the talents of Stefano Greco, a Steinway artist in Italy, to students in Grand Forks.

"It's an experiment," said Sugiura, who earned his doctor of music degree in piano performance at Indiana University in Bloomington. "I think this will work very well, and it gives our students the opportunity to work directly with Greco, a very talented master pianist."

Greco's class Saturday -- Skyped from his studio in Milan, Italy -- is the first of a series of UND piano master classes this semester including three by Sugiura, a news release from UND said. Students from around North Dakota will participate in the master class series.

Three student pianists will perform during Greco's Master Class: Colleen Argenziano, a UND senior; Caleb Faul of Bismarck High School; and Joshua Gratton of Devils Lake High School.

The program has received support from Poppler's Music, Grand Forks; Schmitt Music, Fargo and Edina, Minn.; and Scott's Music, Grand Forks, the news release said.
